John Keller, forest stewardship coordinator for the Department of Natural Resources, explains the characteristics of a healthy Douglas-fir seedling to a class during a field planting demonstration.

John Keller, Department of Natural Resources forest stewardship coordinator in Sedro-Woolley, has been named the Washington state Tree Farm Inspector of the Year.

“I make sure properties are useful for future generations,” Keller said.

The American Tree Farm System certifies tree farmers who manage their forest land in an environmentally sound manner and in accordance with the American Forest Foundation’s guidelines.

Keller’s position is voluntary, but he said its the best job in the DNR. He has performed more than 500 inspections during the past 20 years.

Keller has received a “golden hard hat” for completing more than 150 new inspections this year. He has also served as a regional coordinator for inspections in the past 10 years.

Keller has coordinated many educational presentations for landowners, including programs that help family forest landowners write forestry management plans.

“The main reason I do this job is because it gives me opportunities to meet owners and listen to goals,” Keller said. “It allows me to give advice on how to run a better farm.”

Keller said he enjoys making tree farmers more aware of their opportunities.

“There are a lot of opportunities forest landowners aren’t aware of,” Keller said.

These include cost-share funding for equipment, any road work that could be done for easier access or better irrigation.

“I can help convey that to forest landowners,” Keller said.

Keller stresses that what he does is really about the forest landowners.

“I come from the government to help you,” Keller said.

Keller spends most of his days walking through the woods with farmers and giving them advice on how to improve their land.

“Foresters are really under recognized for what they contribute. It’s a great way to recognize foresters for doing the right thing,” Keller said.

He said he encourages forest farmers to have the healthiest and most productive forests.

“I do have a great job, I work with excellent, helpful staff both within DNR and with local WSU Extension and Conservation District personnel and the forest landowners I have the pleasure of helping are really great folks,” Keller said.
