Anacortes & Fidalgo Model Railroad Club members regularly gather around this table to share stories and jokes and sometimes a little work gets done on projects for the layout. Members include, from left, Bill Rutledge, Steve Jaffray, Doug Greenfield and Iver Johnson.

It’s been 53 years since a passenger train departed the Great Northern Railway depot in Anacortes, but the glory days of the 98-year-old Queen Anne style landmark are alive and well at the Anacortes & Fidalgo Model Railroad Club. One of the newest additions to their 1,000-square-foot layout is an exact, HO-scale replica of the historic depot, where arriving and departing passenger trains bring the early 20th century back to life.

The recently completed depot, other landscape fixtures based on local landmarks and a wide range of engines and rail cars will be on display at the club’s 14th annual open house 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday in the basement at 419 Q Ave. The entrance is on the north side of the building. The event is in recognition of Model Railroad Month in November.

Like many of the structures dotting the landscape of the Anacortes & Fidalgo Model Railroad line, the depot was built from scratch by one of the club members, co-founder Doug Greenfield. To assure accuracy, Greenfield relied on the depot’s original architectural elevations and floor plans to design and build the detailed model. He included original interior details, such as separate waiting rooms for men and women, ticket office, baggage room and freight room.

The club has been working on its wall-to-wall layout since 1994. It features both HO and N scale layouts and rolling stock, as well as a narrow-gauge line that runs through the sprawling HO domain. The club has hundreds of rail cars and locomotives set in various time periods from the 1930s to the present.

There are currently seven active members. Greenfield says that others who share their interest in model-building and railroading are welcome to join.

The layout is based loosely on the physical traits and industrial character of Anacortes, Fidalgo Island and surrounding area. It includes a waterfront city, a refinery, a lumber mill, the La Conner Rainbow Bridge, Mount Vernon’s old Second Street viaduct and a working swing bridge that is an exact replica of the Swinomish Channel railroad bridge.

An ambitious track realignment project was one of the less-visible improvements made by club members during weekly meetings in 2009. The effort will assure smoother and more reliable circuits for the club’s rolling stock. Landscaping beneath the large Rainbow Bridge was also completed and a fire tower was added to a distant mountain top. Plans for the future include the addition of buildings, streets, curbs and sidewalks in the downtown portion of the layout.

For more information, contact club members Doug Greenfield at 293-9639, or Steve Jaffray at 293-9235.
