MOUNT VERNON — State senators will hold a meeting at Skagit Valley College on Thursday to hear the public’s concerns about property taxes.
The Senate Ways and Means Committee is making Mount Vernon its first stop in a five-city “road trip,” intended to give the legislators a sense of what bill proposals might be popular during their next session.
State government officials are keenly aware of an anti-tax sentiment among voters. Last fall, legislators rushed to approve a law reaffirming the 1-percent cap on property tax increases, after the state Supreme Court had rejected the voter-approved initiative that created the cap.
A few months later, residents in Skyline, an upscale neighborhood in Anacortes, called a meeting with county officials to hear why their property taxes have tripled over the last five years, even with the 1-percent cap.
County officials had no ready answers about individual properties, but they explained the several factors that go into each property tax bill.
More explanations and public comment will be forthcoming when the Ways and Means Committee meets from 1 to 3 p.m. Thursday in the Multi-Purpose Room of the Campus Center Building at the college.
