Shimmering mosaics, yoga, school of rock and much more are offered during the Anacortes School District’s fall After School Arts Program.
The program starts Friday, Oct. 3 Classes meet weekly from 3:35-5 p.m. at the three in-town elementary schools and from 2:50-4:15 p.m. at Fidalgo Elementary School. This session of elementary ASAP classes are also being offered 3:35-5 p.m. at Anacortes Middle School.
Cost is $35-$40. Registration is due Friday, Sept. 26. Mail registration and payment to Anacortes School District, 2200 M Ave., Anacortes WA 98221.
Those who qualify for free or reduced lunch may be eligible for a fee reduction. Call 299-1850.

Anacortes Middle School
• Shimmering Mosaic with Patty Detzer is Wednesdays, Oct. 8-Nov. 12 for grades 3-5. Create holiday gifts that sparkle and shine using glass, clay and found objects.
• Creatures from the Clay with Pat Ball is Tuesdays, Oct. 7-Nov. 18 for grades 4-6. Create creatures from the clay using a variety of techniques. Projects include a tile using impressions in clay, a mask and a coil pot or lidded jar.
• School of Rock with Jake Novarro is Thursdays, Oct. 9-Nov. 13 for grades 6-8. The “Spoonshine” guitarist will create a band experience for any musician with basic knowledge of an instrument. Learn several rock songs while learning how to work together as a professional group.
Students must have their own instrument. Guitarists and keyboardists need to know basics, major and minor chords and how to read a chord chart. Woodwinds need to know the names of the notes on their instruments. Percussionists need to be experienced and able to be somewhat self-directed. Fidalgo Elementary
• African Bead Jewelry with Enid Oates is Mondays, Oct. 21-Nov. 10 for grades 3-6. Make your own necklace and bracelet from the many objects Oates found in Africa.
• Safari Art Start with Mellissa Fernando is Mondays, Oct. 6-Nov. 10 for grades K-2.
Create animal prints, puppets, pastel drawings and more with a variety of art materials. Cheetas, zebras, elephants and more will be part of the safari.
• Draw Imaginary Spaces with Barb Schwulst Wednesdays, Oct. 8-Nov. 12 for grades 4-6. Create imaginary spaces as you learn perspective and other drawing techniques with a variety of drawing materials.
Island View Elementary
• Fall Harvest Baskets with Jane Hyde is Mondays, Oct. 8-Nov. 12 for grades 4-6. Make three baskets: a beaded seagrass twill basket that starts out square and finishes round, a round beaded Halloween candy basket and a fall harvest carrier basket with a square bottom and a square hoop handle.
• Knitting with Chris Wood is Tuesdays, Oct. 7-Nov. 18 for grades 3-5. Learn basic knitting techniques and make a poncho or scarf. More advanced knitters welcome.
• New Yoga Moves with Debra Matteson is Tuesdays, Oct. 7-Nov. 18 for grades 3-6. Bend, twist, breath deep and relax. Learn new moves and invent animal poses while having fun. Experienced and beginners welcome.
• Reader’s Theater with Elaine Phipps-Carpenter is Wednesdays, Oct. 8-Nov. 12 for grades 3-6. The players will present a live radio show. Lean to use voice as the vehicle to portray drama, comedy music and special effects. Final production presented on the local radio station.
• Beginning Guitar with Jake Novarro is Wednesdays, Oct. 8-Nov. 12 for grades 4-6. Learn how to play the guitar in just six weeks. Instruments and music provided.
• Storyteller Art Start with Vicky Corley is Thursdays, Oct. 9-Nov. 13 for grades K-2. Inspired by children’s book illustrations, create your own story and illustrations using collage, water color, pastels and more.
• Basic Cartooning with Mike Matson is Fridays, Oct. 3-Nov. 14 for grades 2-6. Use computers to enhance your character and put it in a real backdrop.
Mount Erie Elementary
• Under The Sea Art Start with Cynthia Logan is Mondays, Oct. 6-Nov. 10 for grades K-2. Create sea treasures using a combination of collage, painting, drawing and printmaking. Learn about colors and how to mix them as you explore what lies beneath the ocean.
• Woodcarving with Caroline Spehar is Wednesdays, Oct. 8-Nov. 12 for grades 4-6. Carve a model red cedar canoe paddle while you learn techniques of relief carving from a master woodcarver. Create your own projects using hand push carving tools.
• Chinese Dragons and Folklore with Liz Lovelett is Thursdays, Oct. 9-Nov. 13 for grades 2-4.
Make paper layered dragons, fold origami lanterns and illustrate a Chinese tale. Fun materials to combine and create.
Whitney School
• Buggy Art Start with Debra Matteson is Wednesdays, Oct. 8-Nov. 12 for kindergartners. Make your own bug TV and show. Make 3D bugs, tell stories while exploring painting, drawing and other art materials.
