Mike Matheson was one of 120 golfers at this year’s Doyle Geer Golf Tournament held Saturday, June 27 at Similk Golf Course. The event raised approximately $20,000 for the Anacortes Sister Cities Association.

Golfers from Anacortes and surrounding areas had fun — and raised funds — at the Doyle Geer Golf Tournament, organizers report.

The tournament held Saturday raised about $20,000 for the Anacortes Sister Cities Association according to early estimates, said Duane Clark of ASCA.

“We are very pleased with that amount and will find many good uses for the proceeds,” Clark said.

Winning teams at the tournament were Team Tesoro made up of members John McDarment, Mike Carlson, Kyle Kerr and Gary Brand in first place; Steve Courtney, Keith Greenwood, Diasuke Sakuma and Tom Nelson in second place; and John and Kathy Campbell and Doug and Suzanne Knutson in third.

Closest to the pin winners were Kyle Kerr and Crystal McDaniels. Longest drives went to Ron Haywood and Kathy Campbell.

The Mulligan prize, a $250 Anne Martin-McCool painting went to Ace Sparks. The grand raffle prize, a Widmer Brothers Brewery golf bag, went to Brad Cox.

The tournament was a success thanks to the donations of many sponsors, the participation of 120 golfers, the assistance of 40 volunteers and the Similk Beach staff, organizers said. ASCA was able to raise funds to provide a good financial boost to many of its student exchanges and various projects.

ASCA is committed to making international cultural and educational opportunities available to students and adults in exchanges with Lomonosov, Russia; Kisakata, Japan; Sidney, B.C., Canada; and Vela Luka, Croatia.

In addition to 12 Kisakata-bound students, three students from Vela Luka arrived in Anacortes on Saturday. And four Anacortes students plus their chaperone are leaving for Lomonosov next month.

“As we know these student exchanges are life-changing experiences, and we are delighted to play a part in the lives of our Anacortes students and the students visiting us from our sister cities,” Clark said.

For more information about the tournament or about the Sister Cities Association, go to http://www.AnacortesSisterCities.com. ASCA meets at 7 p.m. the first Thursday of each month the Anacortes Public Library.
