MOUNT VERNON — U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents arrested six alleged gang members from an east Mount Vernon neighborhood Tuesday afternoon, said the agency’s spokeswoman Lorie Dankers.

The arrests were part of the agency’s program Operations Community Shield to remove gang members who are illegally in the country for the safety of the public, Dankers said.

Agents arrested five males and one female, ranging in age from 19 to 34, on immigration violations, Dankers said.

The arrests were not criminal arrests, Dankers said. However, at least one of the people arrested had a criminal firearms conviction.

Agents arrived at the North 30th Street neighborhood looking for gang members in mid-afternoon Tuesday and spent several hours arresting the five men and one woman, Dankers said.

Dankers would not release the names of the people arrested.

The six gang members who were arrested were taken to Tacoma where they will go before a judge, then likely be deported, Dankers said.

Dankers said ICE works with local law enforcement to determine gang affiliations.
