Skagit unemployment rate rises

Skagit County's unemployment rate rose in June to 6.3 percent over the 5.5 percent posted in May, the state Employment Security Department reported today. In June of 2007 the rate was reported at 4.6 percent, which a state economist said today was a "historic low."

The statewide rate was reported as 5.5 percent, a slight increase over May's 5.3 percent.

"Six-point-three is not unusual for Skagit County," said Joe Giannamore, state labor economist for Whatcom and Skagit counties. "We're not doing too bad compared to the rest of the country. Job growth is better than the country as a whole."
