Anacortes’ Katie Kaestner won individual state titles in the 100-yard freestyle and 100 breaststroke this season.

ANACORTES — At the beginning of the season, Anacortes swimmer Katie Kaestner was less than pleased with how she was performing.

After her final races of the year, she was thrilled.

Kaestner won a pair of individual titles at the Class 2A state swimming and diving meet, improving on two second-place finishes the previous year and leading the Seahawks to a fourth-place team finish. For that performance, Kaestner has been named the Skagit Valley Herald’s Girls’ Swimmer of the Year.

Kaestner won a state title in the 100-yard freestyle with a finals time of 53.41 seconds, then blew away the competition in the 100 breaststroke, turning in a scorching 1:06.27 — a full second faster than her closest competitor. It was also an All-American consideration time.
