Burlington-Edison setter Katlyn Mataya helped lead the Tigers to a berth in the Class 2A state tournament.

BURLINGTON — The reason Katlyn Mataya has become a master of the dump kill may play as much into her psyche as it does in her opponents.

The shot is a weapon for a good setter, a way to pick up cheap points. Most good setters have the shot, which starts off looking like a set but ends up crossing the net in a low arc, ideally hitting the floor before the opposition can react.

Few enjoy it more than Mataya.

“I love it because the other team is sitting back there and you see the look on their faces and their coaches,” Mataya said. “We were playing Selah at state, and their coach was screaming at them ‘Watch the dump, watch the dump.’ I dumped and the coach was going nuts. It was just a good feeling.”

Few are better at it than Mataya. A weapon that loses its effectiveness the more it’s used, Mataya has recorded as many as 10 in a single match.

Her kills were a bonus, however. The reason she is the glue in the Tiger lineup, the reason she was the Northwest Conference’s most valuable player, was her setting ability. It’s also the reason the sophomore setter has been selected as the Skagit Valley Herald’s Volleyball Player of the Year.
