Soroptimist International of Anacortes has named the winners of the 2007-2008 high school and college scholarships. They received their awards when honored at a luncheon last month with families and friends.
The winners of the Anacortes High School memorial scholarships were: Elizabeth Perron winner of the $2,000 Marie Hapeman Professional/Technical Scholarship; Scott Bingham won the $1,000 Verna Wells Music Scholarship; Antonia Heffelfinger is the first place $1,000 winner and Morgan Jones was the $750 runner-up of the Verna Munks Academic Scholarship, an on-going four-year award; and Robert Hammond won the $1,000 John Tursi Professional/Technical Scholarship.
The $1,000 Young Men’s Academic Scholarship winner was Theodore Gross. Winners of the High School Academic Scholarships were Caitlin Reed and Trenton Holmes with $1,000 each and Spencer Andrich, Lauren Richards and Leslie Baca with $750 each.
College student scholarship winners: Alyssa Prime ($2,000) and Malcolm McPhee ($1,500) were winners of the Thelma Marani Health Services Scholarship; Megan Lewis ($2,000) and Barbara Ellis ($1,500) were winners of the Lottie McGovern Continuing Education Scholarship; and college student women’s winners were Hillary Bean ($2,000) and Kelsey Brazas and Christine Mussen who each won $1,500. College student men’s winner was Tyler Walcheff with $2,000. Dawn Bennett won the $2,000 two-year Susan Woolsey Spirit of Community Scholarship.
Mila Zotova won the Violet Richardson second-place award of $300 for volunteer service in the community. As part of the award Zotova could choose an organization to receive a matching $300. She chose the Our Town Our Park project to be the beneficiary.
Olga Amigud, a student at Skagit Valley College, was the second-place winner of $900 for the Women’s Professional/Technical Award.
Several applicants received $100 textbook awards: Skyler Haines, Jody Penick, Kelsey Aanestad, Casey Anderson, Keith Celebrezze, Ian MacKay, Brynn Lewis, Lindsey Lofgren, Crystal McDaniels, Paige Lewis, Hannah Stephens and Karisa Herrigstad.
Soroptimist International of Anacortes awards $44,000 annually for scholarships funded by Soroptimist Thrift Shop sales. This is made possible by the generous donations of the community. Soroptimist is an international volunteer organization for women who work to improve the lives of women and girls in local communities throughout the world, making a difference for women.
