SAMISH BAY — The state Department of Health has asked shellfish growers in Samish Bay to cease harvesting today, pending the results of fecal coliform samples taken in the Samish River this morning.
Those results are expected by midday Friday.
Shellfish companies are complying with the voluntary closure, said Bill Dewey of Taylor Shellfish Co.
Unusually heavy rains for August over the last 48 hours prompted the voluntary closure, state health officials said. Levels of fecal coliform tend to spike after heavy rains, which have led to three other closures in Samish Bay since May.
The state will call for a mandatory closure Friday if fecal coliform levels are high enough to warrant it. The length of the closure will depend on the levels found.
Fecal coliform is an indicator of pathogens that are harmful to human health. Shellfish with high levels of bacteria can cause illness if eaten raw.
