BURLINGTON — The dismal weather of this week may break just in time for some of the state’s top high school golfers to descend Friday on Skagit Golf & Country Club.
The Bill Egbers Memorial Golf Tournament has brought together many of the state’s top players since it began in 1982. The tournament is dedicated to former Mount Vernon golfer Bill Egbers, who died in a car accident in 1981.
Squalicum’s Matt Rawitzer is the top returning finisher, having placed second last year.
Others who may factor into the title hunt are Kamiak’s Reid Martin, the defending Class 4A state champion who is headed to Central Florida next year, Lynden’s Will Holdridge and Oak Harbor’s Phil Reedy, who finished fourth last year and 12th in 2007.
Burlington-Edison’s Shane Stoupa shot a first-round 70 on his home course at last year’s tournament, and Tiger teammate Sam Johnson has been playing well, Burlington-Edison coach Charlie Herzberg said.
“I think it’s a strong field individually,” Herzberg said. “We try to get the best individuals, but the teams are looking pretty good. Kamiak and Snohomish are strong, and Bellermine Prep has a good team. I think Lynden’s got a solid team. It’s sometimes been hard to balance both. This year is going to be a fun tournament both for team and individual competition.”
The entire field plays an 18-hole round in the morning, with the top 40, plus ties, making the cut for the second round. The best 36-hole score wins.
The recent rains, which are forecast to let up on Friday, could help lower scores, Herzberg said.
