Forty-six Anacortes students were among the nearly 1,100 fifth- through eighth-graders from around the state who were honored for their outstanding verbal or math abilities by the University of Washington at an award recognition ceremony May 18.

The students’ academic achievements were found through the Washington Search for Young Scholars.

Fidalgo Elementary School students: Che Adams, Ross Atterberry, Moriyah Bingham, Alana Brandt, Marley Bucklan, Justin Costanza, Keely Cooper, Jared Douglas, Jake Farley, Sean Folks, Hope Freier, Lucas Gordon, Claire Jennings, Mejak Jones, Trinity Lang, Nicholas Papadakis, Clary Petitclerc, Ryan Simonis, Zachary Vance, Hunter Wickman and Monica Willoughby.

Island View Elementary School students: Rebekah Chase, Maxwell Crabill, Chaelee Dalton, Takeo Nystrom and Jack Reynolds.

Mount Erie Elementary School students: Benjamin Bartlett, Piers Britton-Strandberg, Cameron Burgess, Alisha Corso, Louisa Crowe, Mitchell Davis, Hunter Estes, Anna Ford, Myles Ford, Cody Halverson, Matthew Irving, Malin Lunsford, Hannah Parker, Molly Rockwood, Alexander Rodriguez, Stephanie Rustad, Krystian Rutter, Ashley Slater, Peter Smith and Philip Torres.

To be eligible for the awards, fifth- and sixth-grade students had to score in the upper 3 percent in the reading/verbal or math/quantitative sections on a recent standardized test, including the Washington Assessment of Student Learning. Seventh- and eighth-grade students were required to take either the SAT or ACT and score above the mean for college-bound high school students.

The Washington Young Search for Young Scholars is one of a number of programs operated by the Nancy Robinson Center for Young Scholars to serve Washington’s most academically talented students. The talent search was created to make parents and gifted children more aware of challenging academic programs at the UW and throughout Washington.
