MOUNT VERNON — The Skagit Valley College volleyball team begins play Thursday in the Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges tournament, and Cardinals head coach Kelsey Savage-Swapp said the team may be ready to pull together at the perfect time.
“Every single person has improved throughout the season. Hopefully, we’re peaking at the right time,” she said.
The Cardinals open play at 11:30 a.m. against Walla Walla in the first round of the tournament, which is being held at Mount Hood Community College in Gresham, Ore.
“They’re very excited,” Savage-Swapp said of her players. “We have the talent. It’s just putting it all together at once. They know they’re a good team.”
Walla Walla is the No. 1 seed from the East Division and is 13-1 in its division and 29-8 overall.
Skagit Valley goes into the tournament 15-13 this season and 5-7 in North Division play.
The team leaders include setter Shelby Zanoni, whom Savage-Swapp said was named NWAACC North all-first team; and Lauren Hope and Ariel Erlenbach, who were both named to the second team.
Zanoni has 316 assists this season, Erlenbach has 75 kills and 52 assists and Hope has 219 digs.
