Planners gave their nod Nov. 12 to a property tax incentive for multi-family housing units in Anacortes’ downtown aimed at creating a more vibrant “urban center.” City officials are considering adding the new chapter to the city’s Municipal Code.
It would allow a property tax exemption to new multi-family construction in the Commercial Business District for eight to 12 years.
Public hearings in front of the City Council are scheduled to start in December.
The longer term of 12 years would apply to projects providing affordable housing consistent with the ordinance. It requires a property owner to rent or sell at least 20 percent of the units to low- or moderate-income households.
At its meeting, the Anacortes Planning Commission gave input on seven issues before moving the proposal on to the City Council.
Issues included the target area for the tax break, the size of new projects, whether to require LEEDS or Built Green standards and whether to require design guidelines.
