BURLINGTON — Bailey Gates scored the first goal for Burlington-Edison and assisted on the game-winner Thursday as the Tigers girls’ soccer team stayed undefeated in Northwest Conference play with a 2-1 victory over Bellingham.

Gates opened the scoring in the 10th minute by finishing off a through-ball from Rylie Hill. Bellingham tied it seven minutes later. But five minutes into the second half, Gates completed a nice Tiger run by finding Holly Bradley for the decisive goal.

“Bellingham’s always a good opponent,” Tigers coach Jay Powers said. “This was a battle both ways. Everyone stood strong and did their jobs.”

Burlington is 6-0 in conference and 8-1 overall, while Bellingham fell to 4-2 in conference play.

MOUNT VERNON — Rachel Freeman scored four goals as the Hurricanes improved to 3-2 in Northwest 2B/1A League play and 4-4 overall.

Stephanie Geertsma and Mandy VanderMey each added two goals, and Jolene Houtsma scored once for the Hurricanes.

“We passed extremely well today,” MVC coach Randy Vis said. “That was the key to our game. We passed well and played our style again.”

DEMING — The Bulldogs needed a shootout, but got the Northwest Conference victory. The shootout went 4-1.

Keane Olera scored in regulation for the Bulldogs (4-2 league, 7-2 overall).

“It was a disastrous night,” Bulldogs coach Gary Warman said. “We had four players that could have had hat tricks tonight. We just couldn’t finish a sentence, but we got two points on the road. It was hard to watch. We hit two cows in the field and a pedestrian.”

EASTSOUND — Nikki Finley broke a scoreless tie in the 50th minute, and La Conner evened its Northwest 2B/1A League record at 2-2.

La Conner coach Amy Freeto said the win was important for the Braves.

“The momentum of our team has really picked up,” she said.

Myca Gilkey was in goal and got the shutout for La Conner.

SEDRO-WOOLLEY — Noemi Freschette and Emily Bruscas each had a pair of goals to help the Cubs to their first victory of the season.

Mackenzie Shipley added a goal for the Cubs (1-5 in Northwest Conference, 1-8 overall).

“A lot of hard work over the last five weeks paid off and makes some hope for the rest of the season,” Sedro-Woolley coach Bernd Strom said.

ARLINGTON — Jenny Maley and Heather Skeels scored for the Spartans (4-2-2) and Haley Haugstad stopped the potential game-winning goal by Arlington in overtime in the tie of Western Conference North Division teams.

Kristina Longosky scored the game-tying goal with 10 minutes left for Arlington.

SNOHOMISH — Courtney Jackson had three goals to send Oak Harbor (0-7) to the loss.

FRIDAY HARBOR — The Lions fell to 2-8-1 overall and 1-4 in Northwest 2B/1A League play with the loss.

Brandi Dellinger had 13 saves and was strong in goal, Lions coach Adam Woodworth said, adding that Taylor Lee and Tasha Smith played well.

“Overall we put forth a really strong effort and played hard, but made it harder for ourselves than we needed to,” Woodworth said. “We weren’t playing really smart, so we had to play catch-up.”

ANACORTES — The Anacortes volleyball team needed three tough games, but got the Northwest Conference sweep of Lynden Christian 25-20, 25-23, 27-25.

The Seahawks (3-2 conference, 4-2 overall) finished with 34 kills as a team.

“They played well, very well compared to last week,” Anacortes coach Ashley Abrams said. “It was fun to watch.”

SEDRO-WOOLLEY — The Cubs fell to 0-5 in Northwest Conference play with the 25-22, 13-25, 25-11, 25-20 loss.

Cubs’ libero Krystal Daigle finished with 16 digs and had a good match passing, Cubs coach Doug Pass said. Kara Birdsell finished with six kills.

“We played pretty good in spurts, but Nooksack was a better team,” Pass said. “Nooksack has a pretty powerful couple of hitters. I would give Nooksack credit for playing well.”

BURLINGTON — Kinsey Davis had 17 kills and five aces, Katlyn Mataya had 20 assists and the Tigers improved to 5-0 in the Northwest Conference and 6-0 overall with a 25-15, 25-7, 25-15 victory over Bellingham.

SHORELINE — Concrete fell to 0-8 on the season with the 25-7, 25-9, 25-23 loss. Violet League led the way for the Lions with seven blocks.

“They played pretty good,” Concrete Billie Bjornsen said. “We changed the rotation and it kind of took two games to adjust, but the third game was better.”

MOUNT VERNON — The Vikings swept the Northwest 2B/1A League match 25-21, 25-8, 27-25.

Jenell Schloemer had seven kills and Brittany Carman added two aces.

The Hurricanes are 0-5 in league and overall.

SEATTLE — Jamie McDonald had nine kills and two blocks and Casey Axelson had 16 assists to lead the Scots (2-2) to a non-league win over the Spartans, 25-18, 25-17, 26-24.

The Spartans are 5-1 overall.

“They served really well and kept the ball in play,” Stanwood coach Erik Titus said of Shorecrest.

Sarah Titus had 19 digs for stanwood.

LYNNWOOD — Oak Harbor won the first two games, but fell 25-27, 22-25, 25-17, 25-23, 15-7 in non-conference play.

Jessica Muzzall had 16 kills and four blocks, and Jennifer Jansen added 15 kills for the Wildcats. Melanie Cone dished out 23 assists.

DEMING — The Bulldogs survived a first-game loss to claim a Northwest Conference win, 16-25, 25-20, 25-22, 25-20.

“We struggled a little bit with our first contact but were 95 percent serving with nine aces. And we had 36 kills and improved play from our middles,” Mount Vernon coach Debbie Guildner.

Mount Vernon improved to 4-1 in Northwest Conference and 4-2 overall.
