POULSBO — The Burlington-Edison football team’s run in the 2009 playoffs was shorter than the previous two seasons.
The Tigers’ attempt at a furious fourth-quarter comeback fell short Saturday night as Sequim stopped Burlington-Edison on a two-point conversion with no time left to hold on for a 34-32 win.
Burlington-Edison scored three touchdowns in the fourth quarter to cut a 22-point deficit to two as time expired in regulation. Dylan Boe found Achilles Wynn for a 13-yard touchdown pass on fourth down with no time left on the clock.
Damon Acoba’s run on a two-point conversion came up short.
Burlington-Edison finishes the season at 8-3. The Tigers had reached the state finals and semifinals, respectively, in the past two years.
The Tigers never led, as Sequim took advantage of a turnover on the opening kickoff for a quick score. Burlington-Edison had a pair of scoring drives on its first two possessions, but had to settle for Andrew Furney field goals of 30 and 35 yards. Trailing 14-6, the Tigers finally got into the end zone on a Mikey Sanchez touchdown run, but the attempt for two points failed and Burlington-Edison still trailed 14-12.
Sequim scored the next three touchdowns to take a 34-12 lead. Wolves quarterback Drew Rickerson threw a pair of long touchdown passes to John Textor, the first covering 59 yards in the second quarter, the second 44 yards in the third. Running back Travis Decker had a touchdown in that stretch as well for the Wolves.
The Tiger comeback started with a 10-yard touchdown pass from Boe to Jacob Schifferl. Acoba, who led the Tigers with 126 yards rushing on 15 carries, picked up 13 of those on a touchdown run that cut the deficit to 34-26.
The Tigers covered 65 yards in nine plays for the final score, including three completions to Wynn.
Sequim (10-1) will take on the winner of the game between Lynden and Black Hills. The result was not available at press time.
Wynn finished with eight catches for 103 yards unofficially. Boe completed 15-of-32 for 190 yards and two touchdowns.
Decker had 155 yards on the ground, Textor 129 on five receptions for Sequim.
