After reaching the district play-in game last year, the Burlington-Edison boys’ soccer team will return a physical group on the field this year.
The Tigers will have 10 seniors, and a handful of juniors and sophomores that should contribute, coach Jay Powers said.
Two of the sophomores — midfielder Andrew Furney and forward Juan Munoz — should play a critical role in the success of the squad. Seniors Hector Miranda and Kyle Butterfield have also been playing well in practice, Powers said, as have juniors Marco Ramirez and Jory VanDerMeulen.
Goalkeeper Eli Robinson will be back on goal for the team, the coach said.
“He’s got such good size and a huge wing span,” Powers said.
Newcomer Rylie Haveman, a senior, has also looked good during practice.
Last year Burlington-Edison lost seven seniors to graduation. This year’s group may lack experience but it doesn’t lack hustle.
“They’ve all shown that they want to play,” Powers said. “They’re working very hard in practice. We’re going to have a strong desire to compete this year and that’s a great thing to have.”
