The fire on the Tommy Thompson Parkway trestle over Fidalgo Bay is now being treated as arson.

ANACORTES — Firefighters have extinguished the final hot spots of a suspicious fire that destroyed the midspan of the Tommy Thompson Parkway, and cleanup crews began to pick up debris from the shoreline of Fidalgo Bay.

Flames destroyed 300 feet of the trestle Thursday, and police are investigating the blaze as an arson.

A couple walking on the Thompson trail saw the fire and called 911 late Thursday morning, said Detective Sgt. Wayne Korterud of the Anacortes Police Department.

Police are “aggressively” investigating, questioning witnesses and reviewing surveillance tapes of the area, said police Chief Bonnie Bowers.

Investigators ask anyone with information about the fire to call a tip line at 360-293-4684.
