STANWOOD — The Stanwood boys’ basketball team played good defense throughout on Tuesday, beating Jackson 46-35 in a Northwest 4A District tournament first-round playoff game.
“Holding a team that averages 60 points to 35 that was definitely a goal of ours,” said Stanwood coach Zach Ward. “I told the guys that’s about as good as I could expect them to play.”
Stanwood (16-5) advances to face Mountlake Terrace on Friday. The winner earns a berth to the state tournament.
Kale Schmidt had 15 points for Stanwood, while Kyle Hushagen added 12 points.
While neither team shot the ball well in the first half — Stanwood led 15-12 at halftime — the Spartans found a little bit of offense late with a 20-point fourth quarter.
Stanwood also rebounded the ball well. Hushagen had 14 rebounds and Zack Johnson 12.
“We not only did a good job forcing them to miss but we did a good job getting the rebounds,” said Ward.

DEMING — The Seahawks improved their playoff chances with a Northwest Conference win over the Mountaineers.
Anacortes is tied with Lynden for the conference’s fifth and final spot in the Northwest 2A District playoffs. The Seahawks hold the tiebreaker over Lynden, which finishes its regular season against Squalicum, the top-ranked 2A team in the state.
Against Mount Baker, Anacortes (6-6 in conference, 11-8 overall) put together a strong second half to put itself in better playoff position.
“That’s what we wanted to do,” said Anacortes coach Brett Senff. “We wanted to take care of business.”
Mackenzie Larkin scored 17 points for Anacortes, while Ryan Hayes finished with 13, Jackson Kirkpatrick with 12 and Luke Averill 11.
Larkin is still recovering from a sprained ankle.
“He’s about 75 to 80 percent right now,” said Senff. “We’re still icing it and leaving him out of practice a couple times a week to make sure he’s healthy.”

LA CONNER — Cory Kuipers scored 19 points as the Hurricanes beat the Crusaders in a Northwest 2B/1A League tiebreaker.
The victory puts Mount Vernon Christian into the Tri-District 2B tournament, where it will play at Tacoma Baptist on Thursday.
“Our guys played real hard, they didn’t give up in tough situations and we made plays when we needed to,” said Mount Vernon Christian coach Kevin VanderWal.
The Hurricanes (9-8 overall) also had 12 points from Mark Hogan.

SEDRO-WOOLLEY — Cheyenne Best scored 28 points and Keiana Clark added 20 as the Cubs won their final Northwest Conference game.
The win was the Cubs’ first since Jan. 14, snapping a 10-game losing streak.
Sedro-Woolley (3-10 in conference, 4-16 overall) took a seven-point lead at the end of the first quarter and never looked back against the Borderites
