The state Department of Health lifted a voluntary ban on shellfish harvesting in Samish Bay late this morning.
The department called for the voluntary cease-harvest on Friday after a water sample taken in the Samish River on Thursday had a high level of fecal coliform bacteria.
The closure was originally scheduled to end at 8 a.m. today, but the Health Department waited for the results of samples taken Monday before re-opening the shellfish beds to commercial harvest.
“(Fecal coliform levels) were not at the action level that would cause us to either institute a voluntary closure request or a mandatory closure of Samish Bay,” said Greg Combs of the Health Department.
County and state officials took more samples on Tuesday, both in the Samish River and in Samish Bay over the shellfish beds.
Results of the marine samples will be available Thursday.
