BURLINGTON — Cody Saben’s come-from-behind victory at No. 2 singles helped lift the Burlington-Edison Tigers to a 4-3 win over Mount Vernon on Wednesday in a non-league match.
Saben defeated Jeremy Boyd 7-6(2), 4-6, 6-4 after losing the second set and being behind in the third.

“It was a shootout because it went down to the very end,” Burlington-Edison coach Asher Cohen said. “It was a really, really good effort on his part to come back.”

The Tigers (5-7 overall) got three wins at singles, with Chris Stilwill beating Cameron Addison 7-5, 7-5 and Will Stewart beating Darrell Cray 6-3, 6-3.

In doubles, the Tigers’ duo of Craig Babington and Dominic Zaccardi beat Ryan Landingin and Justin Sturdy 6-2, 6-0.

Mount Vernon’s Clint Meckstroth got the win at No. 1 singles, downing Zach Flaton 6-2, 3-6, 6-2.

The Bulldogs also got a couple of wins in doubles, Ryan Schwehm and Brian Leer beat Etienne Luiten and Carson Thompson 6-4, 6-7(3), 6-4 and Sean Wells and Kevin Sutherland also won.

EVERETT — Kyle Koetje got a win at No. 1 singles, but the Spartans fell to the Bruins.

Koetje beat Brendon Beaver 6-2, 6-1 and Trevor Bell got a 6-3, 6-3 win over Chris Chung at No. 4

In doubles, Zach Meyer and Kyle Luck beat Alex Phetsadakone and Brad Le 6-4, 6-4.

Oak Harbor Wildcats 3

EVERETT — The Seagulls swept the doubles matches on their way to the Western Conference North win.

Oak Harbor’s Ryan Evans won at No. 2 doubles, beating Michael Iringan 6-0, 6-0; Jordan Kingma beat Dan Syder 7-5, 7-5; and Josh Evans beat Evan Ebert 6-1, 6-2.

Anacortes Seahawks 3

LYNDEN — Mackenzie Larkin and Zach Purser got wins in singles for the Seahawks, Sean Higgins and Jonah Richards got a win at doubles, but the Lions edged the Seahawks in Northwest Conference play.

Larkin beat Will VanderVeen 6-3, 6-1, Purser beat Aaron Libolt 6-3, 6-4 and Higgins and Richards beat Kurtis Reardon and Brian Sumpter 6-2, 7-6(3), 7-5.

“I thought Zach played well. Aaron Libolt is tough. He’s an athlete who runs down everything,” Anacortes coach Jeff Thomas said.

FERNDALE — Calvin Rutherford and Henry Bletsh, both freshmen, got a victory at No. 3 doubles for the Cubs with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Taylor Garrod and Tom Horak of the Golden Eagles.

MOUNT VERNON — The home course was good to both the Mount Vernon girls’ and boys’ cross country teams.

Ethan Garrison and Nate Minor took both of the top two spots in the boys’ race, Kayla Johnston won the girls’ race and both the Bulldogs’ teams prevailed in a three-team meet Wednesday.

On the boys’ side, Garrison was the overall winner (17:09), Minor took second (17:39) and the Bulldogs placed five runners in the top 10, with John Groesbeck taking sixth (18:22), Michael Lien taking seventh (18:33) and Jacob Phipps taking ninth (19:15).

Sedro-Woolley’s Kevin Bartelt was third overall (17:49) as the highest placing Cub.

Mount Vernon won with 25 team points to beat Ferndale (42) and Sedro-Woolley (60).

On the girls’ side, Johnston was the only runner to finish the race in less than 21 minutes at 20:34.

Sedro-Woolley’s Jordyn Adams was second (21:18).

The Bulldogs had five runners in the top 10, with Johnston’s winning run followed by Tessa Murray (fifth, 21:50), Kathryn Benson (sixth, 22:03), Jillian Beldin (eighth, 22:32) and Teylor Wilbur (22:35).

Mount Vernon’s 29 team points bested Sedro-Woolley (45) and Ferndale (53).

Blaine, Nooksack Valley, Squalicum at Burlington-Edison
BURLINGTON — The Burlington-Edison cross country team placed five runners among the top eight spots for the win against a trio of Northwest Conference opponents.

Conner Whan was the highest finishing Tiger with a second-place effort (16:18), followed by Tyler Williams (third, 16:21), Alan DenAdel (sixth, 16:44), Nathan Power (seventh, 16:47) and Antonio Morales (eighth, 16:47).

Burlington-Edison had 26 team points, beating out Squalicum (47), Blaine (68) and Nooksack Valley (90).

On the girls’ side, Squalicum’s Sophie Curl set a new course record at 19:26, beating the previous record, 19:32, set by Sehome’s Annie Moore.

The Storm won the meet with 38 team points to beat Nooksack Valley (48), Burlington-Edison (60) and Blaine (80).

Keana Bingham was the best-finishing Tiger with an eighth-place performance (20:59).

Anacortes, Lynden Christian at Lynden
LYNDEN — Anacortes’ top runners took seventh for both boys and girls in the Northwest Conference meet.

Corey Rosson (17:35.24) was the top Seahawk finisher among boys, 14 seconds behind winner Josh Diacogiannis of Lynden. Terrah Romano (22:50.16) was tops among Anacortes girls. Lynden’s Karla Witte won in 20:41.9.
