KEYSTONE — Washington State Ferries officials announced Monday that it will award a contract to Todd Pacific Shipyards to build one 64-auto ferry for the Keystone-Port Townsend route.
Last month, Todd Shipyards’ $65.5 million bid was only one received by the state agency to build one Island Home-style ferry, which will hold 750 passengers. Construction on the vessel is expected to take 18 months.
News of State Ferries’ intent to accept the bid was leaked last week when Sen. Mary Margaret Haugen responded to questions about new ferries at a meeting of government officials from Island County communities.
The new ferry will be the first one to replace the four steel electric-class vessels, which were pulled from service in November 2007. Since Todd Shipyards’ bid was higher than expected, state officials say they plan to look for ways to build subsequent replacement vessels less expensively. The 2008 Legislature approved $85 million for up to three 64-passenger ferries, but the amount won’t cover construction for two Island Home vessels.
The Keystone route is being served by the Steilacoom II, which is on lease from Pierce County until August. State officials plan to extend the lease.
