Smoke from a 60-acre wildfire in northeast Whatcom County could be visible in some parts of Skagit County, according to the Department of Natural Resources.

About 100 firefighters and two helicopters are fighting the fire, which was reported about 3 miles south of the Canadian border near Kendall, said DNR spokesman Mark Morrow. The cause is under investigation.

“It is unusual to have a fire this size this time of year,” Morrow said.

The fire was reported just after 5 p.m. Thursday. Morrow said there are some Skagit County DNR employees helping to fight the fire.
