CONWAY — Wiley Slough’s unique landscape will never look the same. While all acknowledge the emerging wetlands will be better for salmon, a few still see tragedy.
The slough looked like a construction site Thursday, with dry, bare dirt exposed and rock walls waiting for a building foundation. But in a year, after the crew has constructed several protective dikes, the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife will open existing dikes and flood the entire area with water.
Once flooded, the area will restore an important habitat between the ocean and spawning ground for growing salmon.
