A frisky Fido is a healthier pet; get out and exercise – both of you
The weather is getting warmer and the days longer, a perfect time for you and Fido to lose that extra winter weight. Both people and pets enjoy exercise more — and are likely to continue — when it’s fun. Here are some ideas for a more enjoyable exercise time.
We in the Pacific Northwest are blessed with a variety of walking and hiking trails, some of which allow your dog to run leash-free. These are excellent for getting your pup in shape. Dogs often enjoy running ahead on the trail to check out new scents, giving them even more mileage. Before you take the leash off your dog, be sure he’s thoroughly trained to come when called, even if he might be distracted by other dogs or animals. Social etiquette is a must on the trail. Not all hikers appreciate a pumped-up pet. If your pup isn’t ready to hike without a leash, you can still increase the exercise challenge by equipping him with a backpack and allowing him to pack the water for the trip.
Playing fetch is a great game for both mental and physical exercise, and to teach a little obedience. For instance, ask your dog to wait while you throw the ball. You may have to hold his collar for a bit until he catches onto the new rules. Waiting longer each time before sending your dog will increase his patience and challenge his memory.
You also can employ a field-training technique. Engage the help of an assistant, who can throw a toy into an open area while you hold your dog. Then send your pup to pick up the toy and cheer and whistle to draw him back. Increasing the distance between you and your helper will give your dog more exercise, boost his obedience skills, and provide him with the opportunity to use his nose to find the object hidden in the grass.
Another great exercise is swimming, especially for older dogs or those with joint problems. Encourage your dog to swim by playing fetch in the water, swimming with you or following behind your canoe or kayak. Make sure you can hoist the pup aboard if he gets tired.
Biking is another fun activity, providing great exercise for a young, high-energy dog. The safest way to ride with your dog is by using a special bike attachment that fits on the frame of your bike. The dog is clipped to the side of the bike and a spring minimizes pulling. Your first ride should be short to allow your dog to learn how to match the bike’s speed.
It’s important to make sure your pup is in good health before starting an exercise program. If your dog is seriously overweight, get a thorough vet check. Take it easy on your furry friend at the start. Remember that most dogs have enjoyed too much time perched on the couch during the winter months. Some won’t hold themselves back even if they are worn out. Adjust to the weather: Each year, dogs die from heat stroke. Take regular water breaks and pay close attention to how your dog is behaving. You may need to call it quits even though Fido is still saying he can play.
