MOUNT VERNON — After a judge told Isaac Lee Zamora today that he faces six counts of murder and four counts of assault, Zamora replied: “I kill for God. I listen to God.” Then he repeated the same words.
It was the first time Zamora, 28, had spoken publicly since his arrest Tuesday. Zamora, who is accused of killing six people, including a sheriff’s deputy, and wounding four others Tuesday. He appeared in Skagit County District Court today to hear the charges: six counts of first-degree murder and four counts of first-degree assault.
Zamora, who is being held in the Snohomish County Jail, was brought into the courthouse by two Snohomish County sheriff’s deputies. He wore an orange jail jumpsuit and chains and stood quietly for most of the proceeding.
As the hearing was ending and Zamora was asked to sign a court document, he twice said aloud: “I kill for God. I listen to God.”
District Court Judge Warren Gilbert read each charge, which carry a sentence of up to life in prison. That doesn’t mean the death penalty is off the table, according to the Skagit County prosecutor.
“Do you talk about it? Sure you talk about it,” Prosecutor Rich Weyrich said after the hearing. “Where it goes, it’s way too early to decide that.”
Zamora was not required to enter a plea today during the magistrate’s court hearing. The charges filed in District Court allow Zamora to be held in custody for 30 days. He will later be formally charged in Superior Court. Bail remained set at $5 million.
A hearing has been set for Oct. 3.
The affidavit for probable cause, which explains all of the charges, remains sealed for 10 more days while the investigation continues. The affidavit contains details in support of the charges.
