MOUNT VERNON — The arraignment for multiple-slaying defendant Isaac L. Zamora was delayed today for two weeks to give a “death-qualified” attorney time to take the lead on the case.

That attorney will be Wesley Richards, a Seattle public defender who has experience in three potential death penalty cases. Another outside attorney will be hired by the Public Defender’s Office to assist Richards.

Skagit County Prosecutor Rich Weyrich has not said if he is pursuing the death penalty, but has not ruled it out.

Zamora is accused of killing six people and trying to kill six more during a Sept. 2 rampage that began in his rural Alger neighborhood.

Zamora appeared before Skagit County Superior Court Judge Michael Rickert this morning before the judge delayed the arraignment proceeding. An unshaven Zamora squinted as if confused as he scanned the courtroom full of people.

And as he has in earlier court appearances, the 28-year-old Alger man made unsolicited statements in open court.

“Guilty,” was again the first word he spoke as he stood before Rickert.

As prosecuting attorney Erik Pedersen read the 20 charges against him, including first-degree aggravated murder, Zamora repeated, “yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.”

“Oh God, don’t drag it on,” Zamora said and then told Rickert, “Come on handsome, let’s get going, enough of this.”

Zamora is being held in the Snohomish County Jail on $5 million bail.
