Defense lawyers for multiple slaying defendant Isaac L. Zamora said today that they will not contest arguments by prosecutors that he is now mentally competent to stand trial.

After a hearing before Skagit County Superior Court Judge Michael Rickert on a procedural matter, Zamora’s lawyers said that their client will plead not guilty to the 20 charges against him.

Six of those charges are for first-degree aggravated murder, which carries a potential sentence of death.

Judge Rickert will be asked by prosecutors Monday to formally declare Zamora competent to assist in his defense.

Zamora, 28, was arrested Sept. 2 after a rampage in the Alger area that left six people dead, including a Skagit County Sheriff’s deputy.
