‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ comes to life at DanceWorks show

With mischievous fairies, Amazons and lovers lost in the woods, Fidalgo DanceWorks’ presentation of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” promises all the enchantment of Shakespeare with the added magic of a score by Mendelssohn — and some new boom beats for an added kick.

Excellent photography, pretty colors, but dance?  No.

???  This sounds like a fun experience for dancers and audience alike.  What’s not to like?

I would go just to see Tyler Johnson playing that role.  That boy’s talented as all get-out!

Sure, maybe a fun performance, but “dance” in the technical sense based on viewing past performances?  No, doesn’t fit the bill.  Sorry.

If Tyler Johnson is talented, and if you say he is then I believe he is, I am positive it didn’t come foundational training with this group.  They just don’t have it, its a shame.

Oh, I didn’t realize you had a history with this group.  I’ve never seen them perform, but I know Mrs. Goff-Eloe, and she is a powerhouse.  Anytime you get 100+ kids putting on a performance, there will be a certain amount of “this is really just for their parents” going on, but seeing the addition of some talented teen actors like Tyler says a lot about the show as a whole.  I’d be willing to see it, even after hearing about the reputation you feel they’ve earned.

It sounds like a fun take on Shakespeare, and I’m always up for that!  :)

Oh, by all means I hope you go and enjoy it.  Its just not really “dance” technically speaking.  Its good for kids who want to play (and parents who want to pay a significant amount for their kids to play), but those who have talent such as you say Tyler does, their talents will not be honed and unfortunately not developed (or developed incorrectly) for those just learning - very detrimental for a young person with the potential to truly dance.

It’s funny how some people are so pinched in their souls that they simply cannot let an opportunity to trash the efforts of others go by.  I guess it’s one way to bolster an ailing ego, but going after a group of youngsters preparing for a performance is pretty shameful, even so.  The good thing is that the world pretty much functions anyway, despite the wasted energy of cynical, mean-spirited so-called “grown-ups” in our midst.

No one “went after a group of youngsters” - the issue is a “dance” company doing a disservice to the art at a relatively high expense in a community with no other local option.  If you want to hear mean-spirited, ask this group why there is only one local “dance” company as opposed to having a choice between a recreational “dance” group and a Dance school.

If you want to establish a professional Dance troupe with no room for playing around, by all means do so; you will provide an excellent opportunity for a few talented dancers.  I will gladly buy tickets for your performances, which I am sure will be stellar. In the meantime, quit griping. The other 99 percent of us will be happy with what Dance Works offers: learning to move our bodies in new ways, developing strength, balance and musicality, and learning to perform. Is that dance? You bet it is!

A room for playing around and moving a body in new ways is fine, if that’s how its advertised, not “disciplines of dance.” And playing around and moving the body is also free-of-charge. Very little dance discipline as the director attempts to describe it.

I wonder, do you think its okay to advertise a shiny clear crystal as a diamond identified as such by, say, a history major, only to find out when going to a professionally trained gemologist that what you’ve mounted in a platinum setting is actually moissanite?

As I said, for those who have natural talent, their talents will not be honed and unfortunately not developed or will be developed incorrectly. This is very detrimental for a young person with the potential to truly dance, especially so for those who believe they are being taught and paying for and investing time in proper dance discipline.

After the last performance I saw with this group, giving them the benefit of the doubt, I was shocked at how what seemed to be truly enforced was attention deficit disorder!  Kids in bright colors flipping around on stage for 3 minute skits then jumping off stage to make room for the next with no coordination or collaboration between skits!  It was crazy, certainly not a performance - I don’t know what you’d call it.
