An uphill climb

HAMILTON — The most recent effort to move the flood-prone town of Hamilton to higher ground is running out of money and time.

Not to mention that the Hamilton Public Development Authority is backed into a corner.

The agency created to purchase and guide development of a new…

SHAME on the Lawsons.

If somebody dies down there from a flood or a house is washed away, it’s totally on that family.  Do what’s right.  Step up, take whatever $$$ you can get in this economy and go please.  Do the right thing.  Sell to the Hamilton PDA and save lives & property & taxpayer$ from more post-flood bailouts please.  Do the patriotic thing and take one for the country and the county :-).  Thanks!

Why on earth should they have to move????  Isn’t this America??  Why don’t those who live in Hamilton either accept the fact they live in a flood zone and deal with it or move themselves??  There is no reason to appeal to patriotic feelings--it is unpatriotic for you to even say shame on them.  If they bought their property fair and square--isn’t it theirs?  Who are you to shame them?

I am to shame them for refusing to help people who can’t afford to leave the floodway and start a new life.

I am to prevent a humanitarian disaster on our fellow citizens.

I am to provide a means to condemn the current Hamilton town site and stop the post-flood checks that don’t get spent on relocation.

There you go.  Part of being American is helping one another in my view, not me-me-me-me-me-ME!

Not afford to move!!!!!!! Have you had your head in the sand? The goverment has paid, and paid, and paid over and over again to help the residence of Hamliton re-build and move. Were has that money come from? us the tax payer. They all bought knowing that the town floods. If you moved in knowing that, then you should know how to deal with it.

You state that you are to provide a means to condemn the current Hamilton town site. Condemn that’s O.K. with me. but to force someone else to sell their land so that they can move.......WOW. The goverment needs to stop giving them money to re-build. Most don’t use the money for what it has been given for.

It sounds to me skagitonian that you are democrat. Given more money to people who should know better. Do too your pour planning on home location doesn’t mean that I should help bail you out of your situation.

Being American means being smart about your chooses.  Not pushing people around and making them do what you want them to do.

PS. I want to move my house onto your property Skagit it appears that I can’t afford to live were I’m at. Could you start drawing up the papers, I’ll let you know what I will be paying for your land. Thanks for the help fellow American.

cal34,
A lot of these people aren’t told it floods and it costs a lot of money to move - more than the flood insurance payments.  The NFIP is the Great American Bailout, period.  By evacuating Hamilton from the floodplain, we stop these bailout payments once and for all.  It is unpatriotic to condemn your fellow citizens to hell.

cal34, sorry to pile on here but I am also a moderate Republican and torqued off at the bailouts for GM and AIG and Hamilton - all three of whom waste the money when a controlled crash called a bankruptcy would be best.  I agree 100% “The goverment needs to stop giving them money to re-build” so let’s get these people out of the floodplain and off of the NFIP program so that Burlington which pays more than claims in damages and other towns stop subsidizing bad choices.

Sadly, the Lawson family is standing in the way like George Wallace.  Shame on them for not stepping forward to help save all of us.

Oh and the Janicki involvement?  Is this to help or what?  I hope it’s to help, please let that be the case oh please.

Is it true hamilton nevered flooded until further down the pike we built flood banks? Who is to blame for hamilton flooding? I dont understand why theres no class action lawsuite against skagit county & the city of burlington & mount vernon… after all they built banks to protect there citys...and hamilton got the water.

On the flip side, hamilton is a seriously drug invested town ... they have alot of issues on there hand

GaryK, Hamilton has flooded again and again.  The problem is, assessors and realtors don’t pass on the info too well.  Some people just swoop in and evac after the flood and some just stick around for the flood of water that brings the flood of $$$.

As far as the drugs, I am all for setting strict rules as part of this restructuring of Hamilton.  After all, it’s our money in any event - bailout/NFIP, restructuring/relocation or muincipal bankruptcy.

Skagitonian 1982 it is untrue when you state that information about Hamilton flooding isn’t passed on.  The first thing we were told when we were looking to buy here was about the areas that flooded regularly--and this was by the realtor.

As a taxpayer, I am sick and tired of bailing out those who make foolish decisions.  Whatever happened to good old guts and determination?  Living with the decisions that you make--right or wrong?  Why does everyone sit down and cry “help me, help me” whenever something goes wrong?  Why are the Lawson’s to blame?  Did they buy their land fair and square?

Kinda reminds me of what the white settlers did to the Native Americans: I need your land--move to the reservation or wherever you can so I can live where you are now.
