Driver in Monday’s wreck may face years in prison

MOUNT VERNON — As the family and friends of Chrystal Hansen mourn her sudden death, the 26-year-old man investigators say killed her in a suspected drunk driving accident Monday night awaits prosecution.

I knew Chrystal Hansen only for a short while. She caught for me for two years at skagit. She was exactly what people had described her as. Bubbly and outgoing. She was an amazing person. To hear about this happening to such a wonderful person was hard to believe. I hope that guy not only gets punished for vehicular homicide I hope he goes down for taking the life of the unborn baby. My prayers go out to the family.

If convicted Hayden could face three to four years in prison based on his criminal history, Weyrich said.

That is pathetic.  The loss of a young woman’s life equals maybe four years in prison?  And that ‘lengthy’ sentence is based on past criminal history?

No wonder drunk drivers don’t worry about getting caught.

I went to school with Chrystal, and even though I didn’t know her personally I could tell how sweet and nice she was. It’s very sad and my prayers go to all of the family and friends. She never deserved this, and it makes me angry that Hayden will only recieve… 4 years? What about the unborn baby? It just sickens me and Hayden deserves more than that!

He better be facing more that 3-4 years.  He needs to serve at least 10-20 for what he did.  He gets out and can continue with his life but she can’t.  My daughter was killed by her husband 10 years ago.  He strangled her.  Because it wasn’t “planned,” and was the spur of the moment thing due to a arguement over his girlfriend she found out about, they gave him 20 years.  He was only 22 when he went in.  With good behaviour, he will be out in another 5.  Do the math and that means he gets to have a life while still young.  There is something wrong when you can take a life and then you only have to serve 3-4 years for what you’ve done.  He had the choice to get in that car and drive.  He made that decision.  Because of his decision, 2 lives have been taken away and one didn’t even get to experience life at all.

The driver made a mistake that cost the lives of a young woman and her unborn baby, but lets look at it from the other side, he is an alcoholic who has struggled with a disease of alcoholisim for some time now - yes it is a disease acording to the AMA - because of this disease he is powerless once he just has one, you would never understand unless you have been there before, how many times have people had one to many and made it home safe, people do it everyday, im not saying it is ok but it is reality, i hope that this young man can grow from this and hopefully will never have to pick up another drink, It is a tradgedy but let us not condem him to life in prision and end up losing three lives, people who have gone through this before have gone to prision, gotten out, remained sober and have carried the message to others so that they might save the lives of people to come. I believe that God has a purpose and a plan for Adam here on earth and for the victims in heaven.

Okay, first off I am not condoning Adam’s behavior in ANY way.  He took someone’s life and the life of her unborn child.  Having known him since 2001 I know that he is deeply sorry for what has occured.  To those that want him to be punished again for the death of the unborn child, the law states that unless a fetus has reached a viable fetal age 24 weeks, then the person cannot be charged for the death.  I love Adam dearly as a brother, but I believe that he should get the maxium sentence for what he has done.  Please also remember that he has a family too...and just like Ms Hansen’s family they are suffering too.  They will live out their lives knowing that their husband/brother/son/father cost 2 people their lives.  Remember it is NOT our place to judge.  That is up to God.  I agree with islandgirl, God must have a plan and purpose for Adam here on Earth and for the lost lives in Heaven.

Yeah, and plenty of others have gone to prison, gotten out after their 18 months to three years, began drinking (or druggin) again and continue on their merry way. I agree it is a disease, as is mental illness. Unfortunately current treatment does NOT ensure that relapses can happen or works as a deterrent to keep our community safe. Therefore I would like to see a new category of convictions: “Guilty but Insane,” or “Guilty but Addicted,” for instance, with the same penalty guidelines for similar crimes committed while just plain guilty. Remember cancer is a disease, but I doubt “committing murder while malignant” is going to lead to a lesser sentence!

Calling alcholism a disease doesn’t make any difference.  The man still got behind the wheel of a car and killed an innocent young woman.

There are no excuses for driving while drunk.  The pain he caused through his actions will affect many people forever.
