On Friday I was at the North Cascades Visitor Center at Newhalem. They were just posting notices about it there. A couple of trails around Panther Creek are closed due the fire, according to the info the rangers had there at the visitor’s center. It might be a good idea to call ahead to check on trail status, the fires and safety if you’re planning on going to the area. The fires were not visible from the Lake Diablo Overlook, the Ross Lake trailhead, nor the Ross Lake overlook where the sign about Jack Kerouak is posted.

Also of interest to people in the southern parts of Skagit County: I was at Lake Cavanaugh on New Year’s Eve. There is a wildfire burning on the northeast face of Mount Cavanaugh. There was some talk about the fire possibly reaching the road if it keeps burning. Sure enough, after midnight as we left the lake area the fire was clearly visible on Mount Cavanaugh. I shot a bunch of photos of the fire from two locations. They’re not bad considering I had to crank the ISO up to 800-1600.

Hopefully the paper or goskagit will have coverage of the Mount Cavanaugh fire. I don’t see any mention of it yet.

Oops. I said New Years Eve for some reason. I meant The Fourth of July, of course—the fire is burning right now, not 6 months ago!
