Mount Vernon police are warning local business owners to be on the lookout for a fraudulent solicitation for funds.

The fraud attempt involves a suspect who contacts local business owners regarding an opportunity to secure sponsorship or advertising in souvenir programs.

The suspect uses names and affiliations associated with local sports programs and tournaments.

The suspect may provide a professional looking invoice, complete with a tax identification number, and asks for between $85 and $100.

Police suggest contacting sports organizations directly if the solicitation sounds suspicious.
