Fly-in invites community to Anacortes Airport

A fly-in sponsored by the Anacortes Chapter of the Washington Pilots Association takes off from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, June 28 at the Anacortes Airport.

On display will be a Navy helicopter, Airlift Northwest helicopter, Angel Flight aircraft, radio-controlled model aircraft and local planes.

Sightseeing flights will be available through San Juan Airlines and food will be available for purchase.

Orca Network event celebrates whale center

The public is invited to join Orca Network in celebrating Orca Awareness month and honoring the Center for Whale Research with a wine tasting and dinner at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, June 28 at the Flounder Bay Cafe at Skyline Marina.

Cost of the event is $50 with proceeds supporting Orca Network’s Whale Sighting Network and education programs.

The wine tasting and dinner will feature Hoodsport Orca Wine from the Washington Wine and Beverage Company, appetizers and an evening learning about whales and what the public can do to protect them.

Center for Whale Research staff members David Ellifrit and Astrid Van Ginneken, who have dedicated their lives to conducting field research to better understand the natural history and demographics of the Southern Resident Orca Community, are the keynote speakers.

Park free in Anacortes, walk on the ferries

Visitors to the San Juan Islands will get a break this Fourth of July holiday week when Washington State Ferries offers free parking at the Anacortes Ferry Terminal July 3-7 and the Lopez Island Chamber of Commerce runs a free shuttle service from the ferry landing to Lopez Village and the south end.
