The Anacortes Relay for Life raised thousands of dollars for cancer research and treatment this weekend at Hope Field at 17th Street and R Avenue.

About $35,000 was raised for the American Cancer Society just from 6 p.m. Friday to 1 p.m. Saturday.

The number of participants, close to 500 people and 37 teams, was down from last year but better than prior years, said event Chair Don Spurling.

The Rekevics team raised the most money, $24,000, and member Stacy Doyle the most, $17,000, as an individual.

As of Monday, $123,000 was raised toward the $165,000 goal.

Donations will continue to be accepted through Aug. 31 at http://events.cancer.org/rflanacorteswa.
