Fred Meyer stores' parent company has announced a recall of ground beef sold in all its stores after reports of an E. coli bacteria outbreak in the Midwest.
Stores, including the Fred Meyer located on South Burlington Blvd., discarded all beef supplied by Omaha-based Nebraska Beef Ltd. on Tuesday evening. The stores are now carrying beef from a different supplier.
Cincinnati-based Kroger is recalling beef labeled “Private Selection Angus Ground Beef” products in plastic foam tray packages wrapped in cellophane or purchased from service counters. Ground beef distributed in plastic tube packaging or in frozen patties are still safe.
Kroger is asking that customers discard or return beef with sell-by dates between May 21 and July 5 to any Fred Meyer store.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture linked the supplier’s products to E. coli illnesses in central and northern Ohio.
Customers are being asked to check carefully the ground beef they have at home in their refrigerators and freezers.
The beef can be returned for a full refund or replacement.
