SEDRO-WOOLLEY — Two Sedro-Woolley men have filed unfair labor practice charges against the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 302 for assessing large fines against them after they took jobs with a nonunion company.

Shane Davis and Chad Aldridge filed their complaint with the National Labor Relations Board after they were each fined $16,000 for refusing to quit their nonunion jobs with an Everett construction company.

The two men, who declined to be interviewed, were represented at no charge by attorneys for the National Right to Work Foundation, an organization that opposes mandatory union membership. The foundation announced the complaint last week in a news release.


Officials at the Bothell-based Local 302 also declined to comment on the case.

In their complaint, Davis and Aldridge assert that they were never voluntary members of the union in the first place and that the fines are excessive retaliation for resigning from the local.
