Kazoos will be hidden around town for the next six weeks in preparation for the fifth annual Anacortes Jazz Festival on Labor Day weekend.

Clues posted on the Anacortes Chamber of Commerce Web site (http://www.anacortes.org) Wednesday mornings July 23 through Aug. 27 will lead you to a local business. Click on “Jazz Notes.”

The first five people to pick up a kazoo at the correct business and bring it to the chamber office by the end of the week get a free ticket to the Jazz Festival on Curtis Wharf.

“I picked the kazoo because I wanted it to be fun,” said Stephanie Hamilton, chamber director of programs and events. “And anybody can play a kazoo.”

Past years had Duck Severinsen and the Jammin’ Salmon hidden around town.

The chamber will also pass out Jazz Festival buttons. Beginning in early August, Rick Star will hand out a free ticket every day when he sees someone wearing a button.

If you’re not one of the lucky winners, you can purchase tickets to the festival online or at the chamber office. Visit http://www.anacortes.org and click on the Jazz Festival link.

Locals who buy online will be eligible to win a basket of CDs from bands featured at the Jazz Festival, Hamilton said.

The opening gala dinner and concert featuring Kevin Mahogany is 6 p.m. Friday, Aug. 29. Cost is $50.

The Jazz Festival at Curtis Wharf is from 11:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 30 for $30, from 11:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 31 for $30 and 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday, Sept. 1 for $25.

A free community swing dance featuring Pony Boy All-Star Mini Big Band is 6-8 p.m. Saturday.

A three-day pass is $75.

Performers include Trish Hatley, Doug Wamble Group, Seattle Repertory Jazz Orchestra, Pocket Change, Clarence Acox, Jeanie Bryson, Dr. Lonnie Smith, The Tiptons, Kellylee Evans and Pearl Django.

A Jazz Walk is 9 p.m. to midnight Aug. 29, 30 and 31 at local venues.
