MARBLEMOUNT — A Canadian couple’s 3-month-old daughter was killed in a single-vehicle rollover on a remote gravel road 17 miles south of Marblemount Wednesday afternoon.

The couple, Russian immigrants from Ontario, Canada, were driving on Cascade River Road to go hiking with their baby when they decided the weather was too bad to be outdoors, said State Patrol Trooper Keith Leary.

They turned their car around, and the mother momentarily unfastened her child from the car seat. Leary said she told investigators she was “fussing around” with the child’s seat.

The man then lost control, and the vehicle went off an embankment 30 yards and rolled. The baby was ejected from the vehicle, according to Skagit County Coroner Daniel Dempsey.

The man then went to go find help, and the woman stayed with the baby, Leary said. About 30 minutes later, a car drove by and brought the woman and child to the Marblemount Mercantile.

They met up with paramedics there, but CPR was unsuccessful, Leary said.
