MOUNT VERNON—Alan Gromus appeared in Skagit County Superior Court today with a new attorney who will try to get him a new trial.
Convicted of attacking his wife and neighbor with a baseball bat, Gromus awaits sentencing in the Skagit County Jail.
But his wife, Pamela Gromus, has hired high-profile criminal defense attorney John Henry Browne of Seattle to pursue a retrial for her husband.
“I love you,” Pamela Gromus shouted to Alan Gromus as he was escorted back to jail after a brief appearance in Skagit County Superior Court Thursday morning.
Alan Gromus, 57, a former Mount Vernon High School teacher, was convicted in mid-July of beating his wife at their Fidalgo Island home with a baseball bat, then turning the bat on a neighbor who tried to intervene. Gromus could spend up to 221⁄2 years in prison for his conviction of two counts of first-degree assault with a deadly weapon.
Gromus appeared in court with Browne today. Defense attorney Corbin Volluz of Mount Vernon, who represented Gromus at trial, is transitioning off the case.
Browne is seeking a retrial, and if that fails, intends to appeal.
