SEDRO-WOOLLEY — As a community mourned one of its beloved members last week, a jar collecting money for her family was stolen as they prepared for her funeral.

Julie Binschus, 48, had worked at the Sedro-Woolley Food Pavilion for 31 years before she was killed in the driveway of her Alger home Sept. 2. Five others were also killed that day. A former neighbor, Isaac L. Zamora, has been charged with the slayings and four related assaults.

Binschus’ co-workers at Food Pavilion had set up a table with flowers and a jar, collecting money for her family. The small memorial sat between the cashiers and the customer service counter in the days after she died and before her funeral Thursday, said the store’s manager Bob Carter.

The jar had been emptied several times Wednesday, but the unknown thief could have made off with a couple hundred dollars that afternoon, Carter said.

Despite the theft, customers and employees donated a total of $8,928 to Binschus’ fund.
