MOUNT VERNON — Kayla Johnston led a pack of Mount Vernon cross country runners on Wednesday to help the girls’ team to a victory in a three-team home Northwest Conference meet.
The boys’ team also claimed a win when the Bulldogs’ sixth runner, Jacob Phipps, placed higher than Lynden Christian’s sixth-place runner to break a tie.
On the girls’ side, Johnston was the only runner under 21 minutes (20 minutes 41 seconds) to claim the overall lead. Two other Bulldogs landed in the top five, with Kathryn Benson finishing fourth (21:59) and Tessa Murray taking fifth (22:16).
Mount Vernon’s 29 team points sent them to the victory over Nooksack Valley (39) and Lynden Christian (55).
Ethan Garrison was the top runner for Mount Vernon on the boys’ side with his second-place finish (17:34). Nate Minlor took third (18:07).
Phipps’ 19:48 edged out Lynden Christian’s Luke Blok’s 19:49, allowing Mount Vernon to take the meet by tiebreaker, which is decided by the highest placing sixth runner between the two tied teams.
Burlington-Edison, Ferndale at Bellingham
BELLINGHAM — The Burlington-Edison boys’ team had the top four runners, easily winning in the Northwest Conference meet. The Tigers finished with 16 ponts to Bellingham’s 56 and Ferndale’s 62, led by Tyler Williams’ winning time of 13:34.
The Tiger girls finished second to Bellingham, led by a third-place finisher Keala Bingham (17:39). Becca Friday of Bellingham won in 16:32.
Sedro-Woolley, Anacortes, Mount Baker at Squalicum
BELLINGHAM — Led by a fifth-place finish from Keiarah Lisherness (21:36), the Sedro-Woolley girls finished second to Squalicum.
The Storm placed the top four. Squalicum finished with 16 points, Sedro-Woolley 47. Anacortes was fourth at 95.
On the boys’ side, Sedro-Woolley was third at 82 points and Anacortes fourth at 83. Kevin Bartelt was Sedro-Woolley’s top finisher at 18:02.

BELLINGHAM — Five different Tigers scored goals and Niki Stilwill, with help from the defense, picked up the Northwest Conference shutout.
Bailey Gates, Anna Griffith, Chelsea Carpenter, Kristine Thoe and Mette Rousseau all scored for the Tigers (6-1), who remained perfect at 4-0 in conference play.
“It was a spectacular game, considering it was a little windy and a lot wet,” Tigers coach Jay Powers said. “Everything clicked well. We were moving well off the ball. It was a pleasure to watch. The girls worked really hard, especially having games back to back. It was nice to have the scoring spread around.”
Powers said Griffith and the defense had good games.

DEMING — Rachel Tingley had 14 kills, Cheryl Eubanks had 12 digs and Katlyn Mataya had 37 assists as the Tigers won 25-10, 25-3, 23-25, 25-14.
Kinsey Davis had 11 kills.
The Tigers improved to 3-0 in the Northwest Conference, 4-0 overall.
Boys’ Tennis
All area prep tennis matches were rained out Wednesday.
All were rescheduled for today except for the Burlington-Edison match, which was moved to Tuesday. The Anacortes match has had no date set.
