EVERETT — Zack Johnson led a balanced offensive attack and the Stanwood boys’ basketball team used smothering first-half defense Friday for a 62-47 Western Conference North Division win over Everett.

Johnson scored 14 points and pulled down 16 rebounds, Drew Haugstad added 10 points and Kyle Hushagen and Eric Chabot each added eight to help the Spartans improved to 5-2 in the division, 7-4 overall.

The Spartans allowed just 13 points in the first half.

“We looked strong all game,” Spartans coach Zach Ward said. “We came out with a lot of energy. Giving up six in the first, seven in the second is pretty good. Thirteen in a half — you’ve got to be excited about that.”

Will Brown scored 13 points to lead Everett (2-6, 3-8).

EVERSON — Jackson Kirkpatrick and Mackenzie Larkin each scored 15 points and Luke Averill added 13 to lead the Seahawks.

The Seahawks (3-0 Northwest Conference, 7-2 overall) allowed just 14 points in the first half and led by 19 at the break.

“We did another great job of defense in the first half,” Seahawks coach Brett Senff said. “Jackson Kirkpatrick had his best game of the season offensively and defensively. He was in the passing lanes.”

LA CONNER — A hot start helped the Braves improve to 3-1 record in the Northwest 2B/1A League.

Brandon Willey scored 20 points, Erik Lindeman added 12 and La Conner outscored Orcas Island 19-4 in the first quarter.

“We came out of the blocks strong and played as well as we have all year,” La Conner coach Scott Novak said.

FRIDAY HARBOR — Chris Smith scored 16 points and Kyler Howell added 10, but the Lions couldn’t overcome the Wolverines in the league game.

“We had the shots we wanted, but we only shot 28 percent from the field. We didn’t reward ourselves well,” Concrete coach Chad Dinkins said.

Concrete fell to 1-2 in the Northwest 2B/1A League, 2-8 overall.

MOUNT VERNON — The Hurricanes broke into the Northwest 2B/1A League win column behind three players in double figures.

Cory Kuipers scored 14 points, Andy Pritchard added 11 and David Riley finished with 10 for the Hurricanes (1-3 league, 5-3 overall).

“It was nice to get a league win,” Mount Vernon Christian coach Kevin VanderWal said. “They played hard and left it on the court. They were really intense tonight.”

FRIDAY HARBOR — Tasha Smith had 14 points and 17 rebounds, and Tori Semro clamped down on defense to help Concrete to its first league win.

Semro was assigned to guard Friday Harbor’s Brooke Jangard, who had 11 points midway through the third; she went scoreless the rest of the game.

“Tori was definitely one of the game-changers for us on the defensive end,” Concrete coach Kevik Rensink.

Kelsey Barnett hit a game-tying free throw late and Smith grabbed an offensive rebound and hit two late free throws to provide the final margin of victory. Violet League added eight rebounds. 
The Lions improved to 1-2 in Northwest 2B/1A League, 4-5 overall.

BLAINE — Molly Breckenridge had six 3-pointers on her way to 20 points to help lift the Burlington-Edison over Blaine.

Kristine Thoe added 14 points and seven assists to help the Tigers improve to 2-1 in the Northwest Conference, 9-1 overall.

Overtime

ANACORTES — Erika Ramstead scored 21 points to lead the Pioneers past the Seahawks in a Northwest Conference game.

Monica Archer had 21 points for Anacortes, Hayley Rieger added 15 and Jorgina Moore hit a shot — her only basket of the night — to send the game into overtime.

Anacortes fell to 1-2 in conference, 5-5 overall.

STANWOOD — The Spartans outscored the Seagulls 24-3 over a 12-minute stretch to turn a 10-point deficit into a Western Conference North Division victory.

“The later parts of the second quarter and the third quarter we dominated,” Stanwood coach Dennis Kloke said. “I was really pleased. The first half of fourth quarter we built it up to 16, but did not finish the game very well. They made it a little closer than I would have liked.”

Freshman Paisley Heckman finished with 20 points for the Spartans (2-7 division, 4-9 overall).

DARRINGTON — The Loggers beat the Hurricanes in Northwest 2B/1A League play.

Mount Vernon Christian fell to 2-2 in league, 6-3 overall.

Stephanie Geertsma and Melanie Kuipers each scored 13 points for the Hurricanes.

Boys’ Wrestling

Rocky Mountain Rumble

OREM, Utah — After the first day of action, Sedro-Woolley wrestlers Shane Hunt, Derek Garcia and Cody Pohren are in the hunt for championships.

Each of the three started his run at the tournament with sizable victories on their way to the tournament’s quarterfinals, which are scheduled for Saturday.

Hunt started the tournament with an 18-2 technical fall of Colby Lindfield of Castle Rock, Colo., in the first round of the 130-pound weight class.

He followed it with a second-round pin and a 10-2 major decision.

Garcia started with a first-round pin (1:09) of Alex Rodriguez of Arizona, followed it with a 17-1 technical fall and a 43-second pin.

Pohren had a bye in the first round, the had a 30-second pin and earned a 13-2 major decision.

The Cubs’ Taylor Knutson finished one win shy of the quarterfinals.

MOUNT VERNON — Erik Zeiger won a pair of events for Mount Vernon, winning the 200 individual medley in 2 minutes, 16.12 seconds and claiming the 100 butterfly in 1:01.54.

Kevin Yarrow won the 100 freestyle (55.08) for the Bulldogs and Ruger Stufflebeam won the 100 backstroke (1:03.70).

The Bulldogs also got a win from the 200 medley relay team (1:54.86).
