Burlington-Edison’s Jayne Thomas reaches for a return Monday against South Whidbey.
BURLINGTON — The Burlington-Edison girls’ tennis team got beat Monday by a team brimming with talent.
South Whidbey handled the Tigers 7-0 in Northwest Conference action.
“South Whidbey is a solid tennis team,” said Burlington-Edison coach Nick Hayes. “They are really stacked. Their No. 1 singles player is a two-time state champion and their No. 1 doubles team went to state last year as well.”
Burlington-Edison falls to 5-6 in conference and 6-8 overall.
“Overall, I am pleased with the way the team played,” said Hayes. “They played tough and never gave up.”

Anacortes Seahawks 0
ANACORTES — The Seahawks wrapped up their regular season with a Northwest Conference loss to the Red Raiders.
Anacortes (5-6 in conference, 7-7 overall) took two of the matches to three sets.
Micaela Baca lost 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 at No. 4 singles, while Connie Grimnes and Monica Archer lost 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 at No. 1 doubles.
Mount Vernon Bulldogs 4
Lakewood Cougars 3
MOUNT VERNON — In what Bulldog coach Vince Huges described as, “not a fun day to play tennis,” his Mount Vernon team managed to beat Mother Nature as well as the Cougars.
“The girls learned than you can’t lob in the wind,” said Hughes. “So they went for the big winners down the middle or down the alleys.”
The lone Mount Vernon winner in singles action was Jenny Taylor, who bested Chelsea Stevens at the No. 3 spot, 6-3, 6-1.
Mount Vernon swept Lakewood in doubles to secure the victory.
Sedro-Woolley at Ferndale
FERNDALE — Rain suspended the Northwest Conference match between the Golden Eagles and Cubs.
The match was tied 3-3 when rain stopped play in the No. 3 doubles match, which is tied.
The two squads will try to resume the match today.

Darrington Loggers 0-0
CONCRETE — Concrete rolled to a Northwest 2B/1A League title with a pair of big victories over Darrington.
Brandon Kales threw a three-hitter in the first game and Kyler Howell threw a two-hitter in the second as the Lions beat Darrington in two games shortened to five innings by the 10-run rule.
The victory clinched the league title for the Lions, who finish 13-2 in league and 15-3 overall.
Concrete coach Jim Newby said it was an especially gratifying victory for a senior-laden team.
“This isn’t just one year of work. This is four years’ accumulation of hard work. Most of the kids who play are seniors and have worked hard to get where they’re at,” he said.
Jordon DeZarn was 2-for-4 with a double in the first game, Kyler Howell was 2-for-3 with two RBI and Derek Rice was 2-for-2 with three RBI.
Chris Smith was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI in the second game and Seth Rauch was 3-for-3 with three RBI.
Jacob Brigham was 2-for-3 with a triple and three RBI and Howell hit a two-run home run.
La Conner Braves 10-8
Orcas Island Vikings 0-5
ORCAS ISLAND — The Braves finished the regular season on a six-game winning streak as they dispatched the Vikings twice in the Northwest 2B/1A League doubleheader.
“Both games were solid efforts,” said La Conner coach Jeremiah LeSourd. “That first game was a big win for us.”
It was a big win because it clinched a second-place finish in league for the Braves.
La Conner will open Tri-District 2B Tournament play Saturday at home.
“This team has really jelled,” said LeSourd. “They are coming together at the right time.
In the first game, Kyle McKnight got the pitching win for the Braves while Kevin Ketcham was the victor in the nightcap.
From the plate in the opener, Matt Burlingame was 3-for-3 with a double and five RBI. In the second game, David Carr was 4-for-4 with a pair of doubles and four RBI.
La Conner finishes the regular season at 9-6 in the Northwest 2B/1A League and 10-7 overall.

Sedro-Woolley Cubs 1
BELLINGHAM — While the Cubs lost the Northwest Conference game, they will enter the Northwest 3A District Tournament at 7-6 in conference and 7-13 overall.
The Cubs held a 1-0 lead after the first inning, then watched it slip away in the third as the Trojans rallied to take a 2-1 lead.
Meridian added an insurance run in the sixth inning.

Mount Vernon Bulldogs 3
FERNDALE — Jake Hoffman hit a two-run home run in the first inning and the Golden Eagles topped Mount Vernon in a matchup of Class 3A teams battling for playoff seeding.
Ryan Knight was 4-for-4 for the Bulldogs, who fell to 9-10 overall. T.J. Wright was 2-for-2.
The Bulldogs will be the No. 2 seed from the Northwest Conference to the Northwest 3A District tournament, which begins Saturday.

SNOHOMISH — Walt Thomas hit a home run for the Spartans, who finished the season 6-10 in the Western Conference North Division.

LAKE STEVENS — Joey Pulitano was 1-for-3 with two RBI to lift the Vikings over the Wildcats.

CONCRETE — The Lions hammered the Loggers in the Northwest 2B/1A league games, notching their first and second league wins of the season.
“We played solid defense in both games,” said Concrete coach Don Beazizo. “And Ashley Johnson pitched very well. It was good to get those first two wins.”
In the first game, Brandi Dellinger was 2-for-2 with three runs scored and an RBI. She kept the hot bat in the nightcap, going 2-for-3 with a double, two runs scored and a RBI.
In the second game, Johnson helped herself out at the plate. She went 3-for-3 with a pair of triples, a double, three RBI and scored twice.
Concrete now finds itself with a glimmer of hope of reaching the postseason.
It all hinges on what Darrington does against Orcas Island.

EASTSOUND — Lani Padbury hit a game-winning single in the bottom of the seventh to hand the Braves their first loss of the season.
La Conner committed six errors.
“It wasn’t our best game, but I think we can learn from it,” said Braves coach Peg Seeling, whose team dropped to 8-1 in the Northwest 2B/1A League, 15-1 overall.
Kasey Swanson was 2-for-4 for La Conner.

Overtime
BURLINGTON — It took a mere five minutes of overtime for the Seahawks to secure the Northwest Conference win — and a spot in a district play-in game.
Anacortes will host a Cascade Conference at 6 p.m. on Thursday.
“It was a great win,” said Anacortes coach Jim Schemmer. “This year has been a struggle and it’s had its ups and downs. We just played a solid game.”
Anacortes’ Jon Sherman found the back of the net in the extra period on a free kick from about 10 yards out. The Tiger wall rushed forward just enough for Sherman to put the ball through a tiny opening and past the Burlington-Edison keeper.
“My assistant coach played for the Jordan national team,” explained Schemmer, “and he’s been teaching the team how to kick the ball. Jon’s kick was a perfect combination of top and side spin. It dove as it reached the keeper. That makes it very hard to stop.”
Burlington-Edison coach Jay Powers attested to just how difficult a shot it was.
“Our keeper made a valiant effort,” he said. “It was just a really good shot.”

FERNDALE — Cesar Marin and Ben Bell each scored twice as the Bulldogs clinched the Northwest Conference title.
The Bulldogs open the Northwest 3A District Tournament at home on Saturday.
Mount Vernon coach Tony Dabbs said the team hopes to make as much noise in the playoffs as it did in the regular season.
“We’re not content with this. We’ve got bigger goals ahead,” he said.
Nate Barber and David Navarro also scored for the Bulldogs (12-1 in conference, 15-1 overall).
Rene Caro had two assists.

MONROE — The Bearcats shut out the Wildcats for a Western Conference North Division victory.
Oak Harbor ends its season at 5-10 in division.

DEMING — Vitaly Datsky scored in the 37th minute to give the Trojans the Northwest Conference victory.
Sedro-Woolley ends its season 5-8 in conference, 6-9-2 overall.

BURLINGTON — Burlington-Edison’s Sam Johnson shot a 74 to lead the Tigers to a win with a team score of 410.
Johnson finished second behind medalist Jake Hoelzle of Ferndale, who shot a 72.
Sedro-Woolley’s Kevin Bron was No. 3 with a personal-best 78. The Cubs’ Trent Gardner was tied for fourth with an 81.
