Lake residents to vote on aquatic weed program

Ballots are being mailed today to Lake McMurray residents, who will decide whether to continue a program to eradicate invasive aquatic plants.

If residents decide to keep their lake management district for another 10 years, they will pay the same rates they have since 1999 to combat milfoil, water lilies and other plants that pose a threat to water quality, fish habitat, and swimmer and boater safety.

Residents with lakefront property pay $120 a year for the program. Residents who live off the lake but have lake access pay $30 a year.

Without voter approval, the program will expire Dec. 31.

Ballots must be received by the Skagit County commissioners’ office by 4:30 p.m. June 8. The mailing address is 1800 Continental Place, Mount Vernon, WA 98273.
