Four fire district commissioners will keep their jobs — whether they want them or not.

No one filed to run for seats on fire districts 1, 10, 15 and 16 during the regular filing period last week nor a special three-day filing period, which ended Thursday, for positions that remained open.

Skagit County Elections Supervisor David Cunningham said those positions become what is called a “lapsed election.”

That means the seats do no go up for a vote, and the incumbents keep their seats even though they chose not to run again, he said

The commissioners can resign, Cunningham said, but “a sense of civic duty might cause somebody to think ‘ah heck I might stay around a little while.’ ”
