Pool festival had wide support in community
The second annual Fidalgo Pool Festival was a huge success due to the help of our area businesses, participants, Friends of Fidalgo Pool & Fitness Center and the Thunderbird Aquatic Club.

We appreciate the donations we received from the following vendors for event: Ana Bamboo, Anacortes Cinemas, Anacortes Kayak Tours, Ace Hardware, Baja Links, Balance by Syke, Bellissima Trattoria, Carol Park’s Body Mind Spirit, Chriswood Chiropractic, Cotton Carl, Group Health, Felted Fantasies, Island Adventures Whale Watching, Island Hospital, Jililah’s Cookies, J & M Concessions Kiwanis Sunrisers, Johnny Picasso’s, Keene’s Jewelry, Mary Kay, Natures Images, Opulence Hair Salon, Orcas Island Sourdough Bakery, Papa Murphy’s Pizza, Pizza Factory, San Juan Lanes, SeaBear, Sebo’s Hardware, Select Styling, Sew Many Things, SilverSneakers® - HEALTHWAYS, Skagit State Bank, SlinginBling, Strawberry Bay Coffee, Swim 2000, The Market, Val’s Tupperware, Wildwest Kettlekorn and Village Pizza.

The Thunderbird Aquatic Club raised over $6,000 with the Swim-A-Thon and relay races toward new touch pads for swim meets.  Dance with the Dolphins participants, vendors, “all swim” participants and other donors helped raised $11,600 for the Fidalgo Pool building fund.

We appreciate all the support we received from our community. We look forward to you joining us again next year at our third annual Fidalgo Pool Festival scheduled for Saturday, May 1, 2010.

Businesses helped kids with life skills
We would like to recognize several businesses in the Anacortes community for their support of our Life Skills Program.  Some have provided opportunities for work experiences; others have provided recreational skill building and/or free lunches.

Thank you to Stork’s Restaurant/San Juan Bowling, Fidalgo Restaurant, Soroptomist Club Thrift Store, Anacortes Middle School PTSA, Westside Pizza, Eagles Club, Kiwanis Shop, Elks Club, Summit Assistant Dogs, Anacortes Public Library, Fidalgo DanceWorks, Kathy’s Upscale Resale Boutique, Anacortes Senior Center, SKAT Dial-a Ride, Papa Murphy’s Take ‘n’ Bake Pizza and McDonald’s.

Our program has also benefited through the contributions of several volunteers. The students have truly been enriched by what these people have brought into the classroom.

Thank you to Apryl Hurley and Elizabeth Welsh from Impressions for complimentary haircuts.

The generosity shown by each of the above individuals and businesses has allowed us in the Life Skills Program to provide a varied and enriched school experience to our students. We extend our thanks to all of you.

Reporter fought for arts, environment
The community of Anacortes was superbly served by Anacortes American reporter Nancy Walbeck. It was my pleasure to call her friend.

She was an ardent supporter of all those facets of Anacortes life that meant so much to me — arts, culture, environment, city government. And how she helped me with the projects in which I was involved! I couldn’t have done them without her.

My years in Anacortes were enhanced by her friendship.
