MOUNT VERNON — Police believe the man whose body was found on Interstate 5 early this morning committed suicide, Mount Vernon Police Lt. Chris Cammock said this afternoon.
Cammock said police located the family of the 23-year-old Mount Vernon man. The family told police the man had a history of being despondent.
A witness also saw the man standing near the viaduct railing shortly before the death. A Skagit County sheriff’s deputy had seen the man walking on the 2nd Street viaduct over I-5 earlier.
The body was found north of the Kincaid Street exit just after midnight by a driver traveling northbound on the interstate. The man appeared to have been struck by a vehicle.
An autopsy will be conducted.
This is so tragic...I hope a full invesigation is underway to make sure that the assumed suicide really was in fact a suicide. My heart goes out to the family of the man and to the driver that found him.
