Anacortes School District Superintendent Chris Borgen will personally see the cuts he has been forced to make in other areas as the district reins in spending.

His new three-year contract had no raise or travel allowance next year, five furlough days — and a $4,000 personal donation to the district.

The School Board approved a contract that includes more than $23,000 in cost-saving measures for the 2009-2010 fiscal year at its June 25 meeting. The contract runs through June 2012.

Borgen started as superintendent in 2005. His current salary is $132,319.

Under the contract, which starts July 1, he will be paid $132,319 for the 2009-2010 school year — which reflects no raise. His salary for 2010-2011 and 2011-2012 will be adjusted by the state cost of living if granted plus 1 percent.

Cost-saving measures in the contract include a personal donation of $4,000 back to the district, not taking the $3,000 travel allowance, taking five furlough days (saving $3,000), not taking a 1 percent salary increase (saving $1,323) and not cashing in 10 unused vacation days in 2008-2009 and 2009-2010 (saving $6,000 each year).
